Impromptu Triumph in Manchester
Things were anything but grim up north on 21 November, as Impromptu sang their way to victory at the Manchester Amateur Choral Competition.
We beat off strong competition from 12 other choirs during an enjoyable day at the Royal Northern College of Music, and have been invited to return to entertain the audience at the end of next year's contest.

Debbie had chosen an ambitious programme for us - Malagueña, Prayer Before Birth and John's Gone to Hilo - and we were generally very happy with our performance. However, as the day progressed and we listened to the other competitors we began to doubt that we were the kind of choir with the kind of repertoire the judges were looking for. Choirs such as A Handbag of Harmonies and The Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus put in upbeat, entertaining performances full of life and good humour, and by the end of the day most of us were convinced our trip north had been for nothing.
It is therefore unlikely than any choir has ever looked as surprised as Impromptu when we were eventually declared the winners! Debbie's choice of programme had been spot-on as always, and the judges were unanimous in their praise of our performance. With the cheers of the audience ringing in our ears after we reprised our winning songs, there can rarely have been a more cheerful bunch of people making the long journey south from Manchester on a Sunday night!
Our thanks go to everyone involved in the MACC for a truly enjoyable, brilliantly organised day.
